Bridge to Terabithia

This children's books tells the story of Jess Aarons who wants to be the fastest runner in fifth grade. He's been practicing all summer, but a new kid - a - girl - outruns everyone. Jess and Leslie Burke become friends, and together create an imaginary magical kingdom of Terabithia. Then one day tragedy strikes. Winner of the 1978 Newbery Medal.
